Der „American Dream“ von Freiheit und einem besseren Leben scheint für viele Menschen in den USA ausgeträumt. Der Slogan Trumps „Make America Great Again“, für manche ein Versprechen, für andere nur Lug und Trug eines Autokraten, spaltet die amerikanische Gesellschaft. Was also bleibt heute von diesem Land, das die Symbole einer westlichen Lebensart für lange Zeit prägte? Die Fotografin Ute Behrend und die Fotografen Michael Dressel, Valentin Goppel, Jörg Rubbert und Josef Wolfgang Mayer, alle auf den Spuren eines Amerikas, das sich in unruhigen Zeiten befindet, erzählen davon in ihren aktuellen Arbeiten.

For many people in the United States, the American dream of freedom and a better life seems to be over. Trump’s slogan „Make America Great Again“, a promise for some, but for others just the lies and deceit of an autocrat, is dividing American society. So what remains today of this country that for so long shaped the symbols of the Western way of life? Photographers Ute Behrend, Michael Dressel, Valentin Goppel, Jörg Rubbert and Josef Wolfgang Mayer, all tracing the footsteps of an America in turbulent times, recount this in their current works.

Lecture, book presentation and artist talk with photographer Ute Behrend

Ute Behrend ist eine deutsche Künstlerin, Verlegerin und Dozentin. Ihre preisgekrönten Fotografien und Installationen wurden international ausgestellt und sind in vielen öffentlichen Sammlungen vertreten. 2025 erschien ihre neue Monographie „Cowboys After Barbed Wire“, das den Buchcover Award 2026 gewonnen hat. Ute Behrend lebt und arbeitet in Köln. „Der Cowboy ist eine Erfindung.“ Mit dieser These entlarvt die Künstlerin Ute Behrend in ihrem aktuellen Langzeitprojekt (Bildband und Fotografien) den Cowboy als kulturelle Konstruktion – zwischen Mythos, Maskerade und Medienbild.

Ute Behrend is a German artist, publisher and lecturer. Her award-winning photographs and installations have been exhibited internationally and are represented in many public collections. In 2025 her latest monograph „Cowboys After Barbed Wire“, was published and won the 2026 Book Cover Award. Ute Behrend lives and works in Cologne. „The cowboy is an invention.“ With this thesis, artist Ute Behrend exposes the cowboy as a cultural construct – somewhere between myth, masquerade and media image – in her current long-term project (illustrated book and photographs).

Josef Wolfgang Mayer ist ein deutscher Fotograf, der vor allem für seine dokumentarischen Serien bekannt ist. Er studierte an der Bayrischen Lehranstalt für Fotografie und war anschließend als Kameramann für Film und Fernsehen tätig. Seine Werke werden regelmäßig in Galerien und Messen gezeigt. Josef Wolfgang Mayer lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. „Amerika – das Land der Roadtrips, der Popkultur und meiner fotografischen Vorbilder für die moderne Farbfotografie, dieses Land verändert sich und was aus ihm wird, ist mehr als ungewiss“. Jörg Rubbert ist ein bekannter Fotograf und Autor, der vor allem für seine analoge Schwarz- Weiß und Farbfotografie im humanistischen Stil bekannt ist und international ausgestellt wird. Nach diversen Monographien erschien nun sein Fotoband „Galveston/TX and the Gulf Coast“, im Kettler-Verlag. Jörg Rubbert bereiste im Oktober 2024 die Texanisch- Mexikanische Grenzregion entlang des Rio Grande Rivers. Dabei porträtierte er dort lebende Menschen und dokumentierte die aktuelle Situation direkt am Grenzzaun. Jörg Rubbert lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Jörg Rubbert is a well-known photographer and author who is best known for his analogue black-and-white and colour photography in a humanistic style and whose work has been exhibited internationally. Following various monographs, his new photo book „Galveston/TX and the Gulf Coast“ has just been published by Kettler-Verlag. In October 2024, Jörg Rubbert travelled along the Rio Grande River in the Texan-Mexican border region. He portrayed people living there and documented the current situation directly at the border fence. Jörg Rubbert lives and works in Berlin.

„The End is Near“ – die amerikanische Gesellschaft am Abgrund? Michael Dressel gibt einen Einblick in die aktuelle Lage in den USA und in seine Arbeit (Fotobücher und Fotografien). Michael Dressel, geboren in Ostberlin, studierte Bühnenbild an der Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weißensee. Ein Fluchtversuch brachte ihn ins DDR-Gefängnis. 1985 konnte er nach West-Berlin ausreisen. Später ging er nach Los Angeles, wo er als Sound Editor für Hollywood Filmproduktionen tätig war. Seine Fotografien, international in vielen Shows präsentiert und die sehr erfolgreich publizierten Fotobände „Lost Angeles“ und „The End is Near“ zeigen eine amerikanische Gesellschaft, die von Nationalismus und politischer Polarisierung, Waffengewalt, Armut und moralischem Verfall gekennzeichnet ist. Michael Dressel lebt in Berlin und Los Angeles.

„The End is Near“ – American society on the brink? Michael Dressel provides insight into the current situation in the USA and his work (photo books and photographs). Michael Dressel, born in East Berlin, studied stage design at the Berlin-Weißensee Academy of Art. An attempt to escape landed him in a GDR prison. In 1985, he was able to leave for West Berlin. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, where he worked as a sound editor for Hollywood film productions. His photographs, presented internationally in numerous exhibitions and published in the highly successful photo books Lost Angeles and The End is Near, depict an American society characterised by nationalism and political polarisation, gun violence, poverty and moral decay. Michael Dressel lives in Berlin and Los Angeles.

Valentin Goppel, geboren 2000 in Regensburg, ist ein Shooting Star der deutschen Dokumentarfotografie. Er wurde vor allem durch seine intimen Porträts der „Generation Corona“ bekannt und erhielt für seine Serie „Zwischen den Jahren“ 2022 den renommierten Leica Oskar Barnack Award. Seit 2023 arbeitet er seinem neuen Langzeitprojekt „False Prophet Radio“ über den Westen der USA und erhielt dafür im Dezember 2025 das hochdotierte Alexander Tutsek Photography Grant. Valentin Goppel lebt in Hannover. „Ich schaue CNN und Fox News gleichzeitig. Die graue Landkarte auf dem Fernseher ist jetzt rot gefärbt… In ein paar Stunden gibt es Bilder von weinenden Menschen in blauen Shirts und von jubelnden Menschen mit roten Hüten. Irgendwo in Amerika geht die Sonne unter. Ich schalte den Fernseher aus und gehe ins Bett.“ (Valentin Goppel, 2024)

Valentin Goppel, born in Regensburg in 2000, is a rising star in German documentary photography. He became known primarily for his intimate portraits of the „Corona Generation“ and received the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award in 2022 for his series „Zwischen den Jahren“ (Between the Years). Since 2023, he has been working on his new long-term project „False Prophet Radio“ about the western United States, for which he received the highly endowed Alexander Tutsek Photography Grant in December 2025. Valentin Goppel lives in Hanover. „I watch CNN and Fox News at the same time. The grey map on the television is now coloured red… In a few hours, there will be images of crying people in blue shirts and cheering people in red hats. Somewhere in America, the sun is setting. I turn off the television and go to bed.“ (Valentin Goppel, 2024)
